FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why see a therapist?

Family can often help children and teens through difficult times, however sometimes children and teens hold back some information on the problem for fear or judgement, misunderstanding, or worry that they will upset their caregiver. A therapist is an unbiased, non-judgemental individual who listens and understands and works with them on a solution.

Are parents present in therapy sessions?

I prefer to invite parents into sessions and be actively involved in the child/teens treatment. Teens often want individual time in therapy sessions, and the information provided in session is confidential, however I encourage and then plan with the teen to invite parents into the session. It’s important that parents understand the insight and learning that occurs in the sessions so they can help their child or teen to incorporate the information into daily life.

How long will counselling take?

The length of therapy can depend on a number of factors such as the complexity of the problem, the size of the problem,  the developmental stage of the child and their investment in facing and fixing the problem and the child/teen’s support system. Some individuals might see significant improvements in 3 or 4 sessions, where other people might benefit from longer involvement in therapy. The therapist will make recommendations on the length of treatment after meeting with you and your child and having a better understanding of the problem.
